  • What this was doing was mapping the drive, remembering the connection then applying the new map. This is not strictly needed, as the GPO will be run each time a user logs on anyway and map the drive. On the drive mapping preference GPO, reconnect was check marked. If We left loopback in place and deleted the mappings and rebooted, then X would only be applied. When Loopback was enabled they would get both G & X. When testing, logging into the server (with loopback) they would get G. When a user logs onto a server their mapped drives would change from G: to X: (G drive they would normally have mapped when they log into a computer X: for the server) We had an issue in which we though loopback processing was not working correctly. So when a user logs into a computer that resides in the computer OU, all of their user based GPO settings from where their user objects resides will be replace with user based policies that are linked to the classroom computer OU instead. To leverage Group Policy Preferences (GPP) you’ll need to administrate Group Policy’s from a Windows 2008 server (just member server) or Windows 7 with RSAT. This will speed up the logon time and make your administration much easier. Get rid of all your adm templates and 30+ page vbs logon scripts once for all.

Those days are long gone thanks to Group Policy Preferences, for me it’s the life before and after. Do you remember the old days when we used the hide drives.adm template to hide specified drives along with some kind of hide drives calculator to get the proper value ? So if we wanted to hide drives for Domain Users but not the Domain Admins, we had to create another policy to lock it up again.
