NCLB required that states create goals to accomplish. The rationale was to try to hold teachers accountable for their instruction. In 2001, the federal government enacted into law the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). Thus, most of the education committee members are disinterested in the integrity of public education and are more concerned with the public’s perception of them. Instead, politicians rely on his or her overall popularity among constituents. Less money during campaign season makes it more difficult to get re-elected. The high interest committees with the most lobbyists see the highest returns come campaign season. Now we see gun control grow to a red giant, while education becomes a black hole.Įducation is among the least lobbied federal committees. Instead it is a failure to take notice of our schools being brought to the headlines of newspapers and mentioned on the top of every hour. The encumbrance is not whether or not to put their lives on the line. What people failed to take note of is the presence of another encumbrance on the teacher. When tragedy struck in December, where teachers faced the same dilemmas as above, the primary concern was gun regulations.
